Smoke in Your Eyes

Like most western states, Montana is hot and dry with triple-digit temperatures expected next week. I was too young to remember the two Treasure State droughts which sent our cows to town in the late ‘50s. Neighbors suffering back then have figuratively gone to town themselves, so with their passing it is easy to think today’s drought and wildfires are the worst ever. Such is not the case. It has been worse, and it can get worse. The primary difference between droughts and wildfires is the speed at which they bankrupt ranchers, farmers, and loggers. Droughts kill you slowly while wildfires generally swallow you in a single bite and this brings me to my point.

This same devastating death by drought or wildfire exists in politics and here is how. Our American republic was founded on liberty, limited government, and individual responsibility where the only function of government was to secure the rights endowed us by our Creator. If government were functioning properly, you should need a microscope to see it working. However, if you view government as Santa Claus driving a sleigh full of wonderfulness, you are hopelessly indoctrinated.

If we look at Republicans from the drought versus wildfire perspective, we find two distinct flavors. First are those who champion their oath of office to support, protect and defend the Constitution and every vote they cast is evaluated per America’s founding principles. Legislation may be supported by 90 percent of their constituents but if they believe it to be unconstitutional, they will vote “No!” During my four terms in Montana’s House there were about twenty of us in this fire camp.

The second batch of Republicans are those who champion compromise as the supreme ideal. They take the same oath of office but dismiss it as ceremony. Regardless the constitutionality of legislation, if most of their constituents or the media or their Democrat colleagues support something, they agree. They love to capitulate. Like a drought, they may kill you slower than the wildfire but kill you they will.

Democrats are the wildfire. Rather than wind, they are driven by hate and view America as racist, beetle-killed, timber ripe for conflagration. President Biden and his minions are knee deep in the ashes of all they have destroyed, but if you cannot see this you have smoke in your eyes. Progressives hate America and are purposely burning her to the ground just to empower the ruling class.
